Huyton Underpass is a popular commuter route which passes underneath the track at Huyton railway station in Knowsley. The archway bridge is located on a major road in and out of Huyton, and as part of a project by Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council to refurbish the underpass, a new lighting solution was required. The project aimed to transform the underpass into a more attractive and welcoming environment for both drivers and pedestrians, enlightening this main route and the surrounding area.
Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council appointed LITE to supply and install innovative lighting solutions from their extensive portfolio of products. The Grade II listed archway required a carefully thought-out installation, and the lighting was required to be both functional and artistic. The lighting scheme needed to create an increased sense of safety and security for both cars and pedestrians, with the products also creating an artistic finish through a colourful and eye-catching display.
LITE selected, from brand partner Color Kinetics, the Graze Compact Powercore RGBW as the perfect lighting solution to fit the brief of a dynamic, colour changing light display. This compact, high-performance exterior linear luminaire is specially designed to highlight architectural features such as archways. The luminaires were fitted to the underside of the underpass and column supports. Multiple luminaire lengths and beam angles support a large range of surface illumination and grazing, illuminating the archway from underneath to cast the entire tunnel in an eye-catching glow.
Graze Compact Powercore is easy to install and operate, controlled remotely using a Pharos Architectural Controls iPlayer Controller with a multitude of pre-programmed lighting shows, allowing the council to programme various set colours and dynamic displays.
This dynamic new lighting solution has improved the safety of the underpass for both drivers and pedestrians by creating a vibrant, well-lit tunnel and increasing visibility in the dark. It has also created a warm welcome to this key gateway into Huyton Village Centre. The range of stunning colours also makes this a more visually appealing pathway to create more enjoyable journeys for the residents of Knowsley.
Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said “The solutions from LITE have transformed the Huyton Underpass into a bright, welcoming, and beautiful commuter route. The user-friendly controls with pre-programmed colours and scenes makes it easy for us to set up dynamic light displays and illuminate chosen colour schemes. We couldn’t be happier with the result, which has helped transform the underpass into illuminated art, bringing attention to the railway station and the town of Huyton.”
